Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to start my pain recovery journey?

No. Kansas has direct access meaning you do not need a doctor’s referral to initiate treatment. We may work with them, if needed, in the future for imaging or other testing to rule out certain pathologies.

Do you take health insurance?

MindBody is a cash-based physical therapy clinic and is out of network with insurance providers which means we do not bill health insurance directly. By operating this way, we’re able to spend more one-on-one time with you, avoid unnecessary restrictions from insurance companies, and focus entirely on your recovery.

Many of our patients find that the quality of care is superior when dealing with complex chronic pain issues and often makes our services more cost-effective in the long run compared to the 3 times per week with “traditional” physical therapy. After your visit, we can provide you with a detailed receipt (called a “superbill”) that you may submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement, depending on your plan.

What is the cost of treatment?

The first visit (60 minutes) is $175. Each follow-up visit thereafter (50 minutes) is $150.

What should I expect for our first session?

Make sure you fill out all the intake forms and consents emailed to you before your first visit. This will streamline the process and create more time for taking history, the examination, and discussion portions. We will take an in depth look at your history of pain and gather information and understand patterns of your pain. I will take a thorough examination of your body to rule in/rule out structural pathologies. Findings will be discussed with you in a way that makes sense to you (no fancy, over-your-head medical jargon used) and we will discuss a plan of action to start your healing and recovery journey together.

Wear comfortable fitting clothes that allows easy access and freedom of movement in the areas of concern.

How many sessions will it take to see results?

A common and valid question that I get all the time. In all honesty, it is very difficult to answer because of the individual nature of each person’s pain experience. I’ve seen neuroplasticity work quickly for some and gradually over months for others. There are two key components that help the process along [we’ll discuss this more during treatment]: 1) Starting with being open to the belief in the pain neuroscience research and 2) Ready to do the work. Trust the process. If you can leave yourself open to these, you’re starting in the right direction and I’ll be there to help guide and support you on your journey to recovery.

How does MindBody PT & Pain Reprocessing compare to other traditional PT clinics?

The biggest difference in how I treat chronic pain is the lens through which I view, understand, and address pain. Most traditional physical therapy clinics still operate from the old Cartesian Model of pain (a biomedical model dating back to the 1600s). This outdated framework has serious limitations and is no longer supported by modern pain neuroscience research. Because of this, many treatments fall short—especially for chronic pain or pain that lingers long after an injury.

At MindBody Physical Therapy & Pain Reprocessing, I take a more effective, research-backed Biopsychosocial Model approach. Pain is complex—it’s influenced by numerous factors, many of which you may not be aware of…yet. That’s why I look at you as a whole person, not just the body part that hurts. Understanding the bigger picture is key to lasting recovery. (see question below about research supporting Pain Reprocessing Therapy for chronic pain)

Another major difference: I treat you—and only you. You’ll never be shuffled between multiple therapists, forced to repeat your story, double-booked with other patients (like Athletico Physical Therapy), or left in the hands of an untrained aide or student (like SERC Physical Therapy). With me, your care is personal, consistent, and tailored specifically to your needs.

I’ve been practicing physical therapy for nearly 14 years and have treated thousands of patients in that time. That experience has allowed me to continually refine my expertise in helping people overcome pain—especially when traditional approaches haven’t worked.

And if you need to use insurance for financial reasons, I understand and I’ll gladly help connect you with a trusted therapist who can give you the best chance at recovery. My priority is simple: helping you get back to living your life.

What research is there on Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) helping chronic pain?

Boulder Back Pain study [Ashar YK, Gordon A, Schubiner H, et al. Psychiatry.2021;78(11):1271-1280]

  • 67% of participants in the PRT group were pain-free or nearly pain-free (1/10 pain) after 8 one hour sessions, compared to 20% in placebo group and 10% in usual care group.

  • These improvements were largely maintained at 1-year follow-up.

  • Brain imaging showed that participants who received PRT had decreased activity in brain regions linked to pain processing supporting the idea that PRT changes how the brain interprets pain signals.

5 year follow-up of Boulder Back Pain study [Ashar YK, et al. JAMA Psychiatry. 2025 Jul 30.]

  • 55% of participants from the initial study who underwent Pain Reprocessing Therapy reported still being pain free or nearly pain free (1/10 pain) 5 YEARS LATER.
